I personally like the simplicity of a great speaker that provides enough bass to eliminate the need for a sub. I have been enjoying a fine pair of New Large Advents over the past year and am interested in trying another speaker. The Advents will be refoamed this week, and I'll run a side-by-side comparison with the 17s off the same system. I use Klipsch KG4s for my main system (with Baby Advent II running off that into my kitchen), A-25s in the bedroom and 17s in the basement. They're outstanding for low-level listening. To my ears, the A-25s don't have the same extension in the upper or lower range as the Advents, but they're smoother and much clearer in the midrange. The 17s feel something like a rough draft for those, if that makes sense. The Advents have sweeter highs and more bass oomph, and are just more balanced overall. The 17s are surprisingly nice for the price (I got mine for $30 and spent ~$10 on new caps), but they're not quite as good as the Advents. I've got Large Advents (not the "new" ones), KLH 17s and Dynaco A-25s, and I have to agree with your characterizations. Worth a listen if you can find a good pair. The 21 year old me picked Advents but I bet the 59 year old me would pick Dynaco A-25s. For "stereo spectacular" recordings the Advents impress where with small ensemble recordings the A-25 might be the more realistic. This Danish SEAS design does not do the room shaking bass of the Advent but it is smooth and musical.

The Advents competition at the time I got mine was the Dynaco A-25. KLH 17s are fine but I would view them as proto-Advents. The "K" in KLH stands for Henry Kloss, the orignal Advent's designer. The phrase "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts" fits here I had orignal Advents stacked and heard stacked "Smaller" Advents many times.
